Zombie Survival Infection

Our friend Graham loves zombie games (and comics, books, films...), so he brought his latest purchase round for us to try out.

Gentle, understated box art.

All the artwork is by the game designer.

Game description.

You start the game with a camp/hideout, initially an apartment building but as the game progresses you might get a prison, hospital, shopping mall.. or even be left without one!  You also start with a few survivors.

Each turn you roll the black die, and possibly the yellow or green die as well, depending upon the stage of the game. At the start, the black die tells you how many survivors join your group.  You might also get to roll the yellow die for some extra survivors.  The green die comes into play later in the game...

In the centre of the table is the pool of survivors, the draw deck and the discard pile.

The basic rules are fairly simple.  Roll the black die, plus the yellow die if someone had given it to you at the end of their turn.  Your camp might grant you positive or negative modifiers to the number of survivors who join your group.  Having no camp/hideout has big penalties.  You then pass the yellow survival die to any other player.  Top up your deck of cards to 6.  Take an action, in our game the only actions we ever made were to play a card.  The game was never slow enough that anyone felt they could afford to spend their action discarding cards or passing instead of playing a card!

Here's an example of my hand.  In the background, you can see the draw deck, discard pile, survivor pool (right), and the zombie pool (left).  As survivors get killed, the counters get flipped over and added to the zombie pool until all the survivors have gone.  You can see I have a Character that I could play - he'll count as an additional survivor, on top of the little counters I have.  Characters have extra rules printed on the card, for instance this one can be sacrificed to avoid something nasty happening to your camp.  Next are 3 Action cards that can be played on your camp or more usually, on an opponent's camp - there are lots of zombie attack cards that kill their survivors!  Finally, there is a Reaction card that can be played against an Action card to add to or cancel out some of the effects.  Reaction cards can build up in chains: "I play Zombie Frenzy to kill 3 of your survivors!" "I use my Shotgun reaction to cancel 2 deaths, and because I have the Police character in play at my base I get to double that to cancel 4 deaths!"  "I play this card to cancel your reaction so you still lose 3 survivors!" "Then I'll use my First Aid Kit to cancel 2 deaths!".

I lost my base quite early in the game when Graham played the Fire card on me.

I had my revenge, playing the Zombie Frenzy, plus added a Reaction card to eliminate 5 of his survivors!

Laura was unlucky enough to be given the Carrier character by Graham.  Hidden in the draw deck is the Hidden Bite card, which goes to the player who has drawn it - unless the Carrier is in play!  Characters have various uses.  The Doctor interacts with a Reaction card to allow you to discard 2 casualties, but will sacrifice herself to save the Carrier!  The Police officer gives a bonus when you have a gun.  Some locations have extra bonuses too, for instance the Hospital allows you to search through the discard pile to find a First Aid Kit.

The green Infection die now comes into play, and gets passed to each player in turn until everyone is infected.  The yellow survival die is removed from the game, and the yellow rules card is turned over to the green side, with a slightly different set of rules.  Now, when you roll the black die (plus the green die if it was given to you by someone), you lose that number of survivors.  In infection mode, the aim is to roll as low as possible every turn!

I was the first to run out of survivors (so got to become a zombie player, trying to kill extra survivors each turn), then Laura, leaving Graham the winner.  It was a fun game, but probably works better with more players, so that there is more to-and-fro between different camps.  There are also extra cards that are used in 4+ player games (1 of which had been accidentally left in the game and which I drew early in the game, taking up part of my hand with something that had no real use for the 3 player game).

Escape from Zombie Island 2019 - Part 2

Previously on Escape from Zombie Island...

Our 5 groups of heroes found themselves stranded on an island surrounded by zombies.  Quickly organising themselves, the inland groups started hunting for supplies and making their way to the dock.  Those already at the dock also started hunting for supplies but disaster struck and some have already succumbed to zombie bites or been devoured by the hungry undead!

Now we return to the action, with the security team speeding towards the docks.  Hurtling towards them is an articulated lorry driven by one of the escape boat crew.  With both drivers travelling at speed and distracted by zombies clinging to their vehicles, disaster seems inevitable...

The security team ram some zombies...

...with disastrous results for the lorry!  Driver should have worn his seat-belt.

Oblivious to the chaos unfolding down the road, the hunters have found fuel for the boat.

One of the miners decides maybe he won't try for the helicopter.

Meanwhile the other two have obtained transport.

Rescue arrives for the lone miner.

His explosions having succeeded in distracting the zombies...

..one of our heroes makes a run for it.

But alas! He has miscalculated.

His last heroic effort kills a few more zombies before he succumbs.

Zombies move towards the carnage of the crash site.

The hunters manage to roll the fuel drum to the boat.

The miners trundle towards the harbour, squashing zombies as they go.

The second low-loader prepares to head to the harbour.

Weaving through the buildings, it bumps onto the road and accelerates.

Drawing alongside the digger, they prepare to barge through the zombies.

The security team move to the cover of some shipping containers.

The digger squashes another zombie.

One of the security team dashes for the safety of the boat.

The surviving ship crew-girl takes out another zombie.

Mashed zombie stuck in the digger's transmission, the miners transfer to the low-loader.

The lorry speeds down the road.

Zombies pursue them.

Getting around the crashed lorry will be tight!

As the lorry slows, zombies manage to clamber aboard.

The survivors desperately try to fight them off.

But zombie numbers inevitably take their toll.

More zombies are accumulating on the route.

Some of them rush the ship's crew-girl and the orphan.

She fights one off but the other two persist.

Still coming, the lorry veers round the crashed truck...

...and narrowly misses the other survivors!

A volley of close-range gunfire disposes of the zombies.

The crew-girl guns down her last opponent.

At last all the survivors are aboard!

The ship fuelled, they make good their escape.

For now, at least, the remaining survivors are safe...

Escape from Zombie Island 2019! Part 1

Last year, a games day for our Scouts and Explorer Scouts (10-18 yrs old) provided the opportunity for another play-test of my home-brew rules.  It's taken a while to edit the pictures but at last their adventures can be revealed...

5 groups of survivors need to gather supplies in order to escape from the island.  Inland is too zombie infested, the only escape route is via boat, but first they need fuel, food plus whatever else they can scavenge.

Without further ado, I'll let the pictures do the talking...

3 groups of survivors inland.

2 groups of survivors at the harbour.

The hunters decide to abandon their camp site.

The ship crew need to fetch some supplies.

The security team want to get to their vehicle without going outside.

Sadly, one of the security team doesn't make the jump!

The ship crew move out.

Jayne obviously isn't used to driving articulated lorries.

Anything in the storage container?

Before the hunters get far from their camp site, zombies close on them.

The hunters ready their weapons!

The chainsaw makes quick work of one.

Before she can regain her feet, the stunned security officer becomes zombie food.

At the harbour, captain Mal also gets chewed on by a zombie.

...and nearby, one of the hunters also succumbs!

As toxins from the zombie bite flood his system, Mal attempts to free the truck.

As it starts to move, the nearest zombie is crushed.

Mal perishes but the truck is free!

The townsfolk try to evade the zombies.

They split up to hunt for supplies.

Blowing up a fuel drum should attract zombies!

Security team survivors get their ride moving.

Jayne goes to town while the hunters run for the boat.

Another survivor appears - a little girl!

The security team smash through the fence, onto the road.

Large numbers of zombies shamble towards the explosion.

Another explosion draws them closer still...

Jayne mows down zombies on his way to town.

His artic squashes the undead with ease.

The hunters resort to small arms instead.

Jayne speeds along the road.

Hunters look for supplies.

The miners are checking out the scrapyard.

There are some intriguing storage containers.

Can the security team evade the zombies?

One of the miners runs for the helicopter.

Another decides to hotwire a nearby low-loader.

Jayne's drive of carnage continues...

...but 3 zombies survive and clamber onto the cab!

Security hurtle towards Jayne's lorry.

The security vehicle and the articulated lorry race towards each other, both drivers distracted by zombies.  Surely this must end in tragedy!  Or will they notice each other in time?

Tune in to the next exciting episode to find out!
